You might be wondering what the differences are between braces and retainers. In general, braces are used to align teeth properly, similarly closing teeth gaps just like what oral bands or Orthofill bands can do. The latter however, are cheaper, more convenient to use, and deliver faster results for uncomplicated teeth gap cases. Retainers, on the other hand, are used after certain dental treatment to hold teeth in place, usually right after removal of braces. While there is a general difference in purpose between the two, both are dental fixed devices and custom-made for individuals. Moreover, they can either be made of metal or plastic.
Why then should one choose braces over retainers? For starters, braces are used to make teeth straight. You can never hold teeth in place if they are severely misaligned or problematic in the first place. Braces offer tremendous solution to people with serious under bites, over bites, cross bites, teeth gaps, and crooked teeth. They come in various types depending on the case as deemed by orthodontists. They work through applying constant pressure to the teeth for a period of time, an average of two years, and slowly move the teeth and its base connected to the jaw. A strong adhesive is used to stick the braces firmly on the teeth. Orthodontic spaces on braces allow wires to be inserted in between the teeth, and these wires are the ones determining the direction of teeth alignment. Frequent visits to orthodontists, typically every month, are required to check if the amount of pressure on braces is still okay, otherwise, adjustments are made.
After removal of braces, retainers are then placed to keep the new positioned teeth in place. This is important to ensure that the bones, gums and tissues are accustomed to the change and to prevent the teeth from misaligning again over time. That is why it is required to wear retainers typically the first 6 months. They need to be worn especially while sleeping. Compared to braces, you can remove retainers thus, less chances of discomfort especially while eating.
